Understanding Employment Laws in New York City

Employment laws in New York City and throughout the country have improved drastically during the last 30 years. The New York City Commission on Human Rights investigates discriminations based on age, color, creed, disability, gender discrimination, marital and partnership status, national origin and race. The Commission enforces the New York City Human Rights Law, which is applicable to companies or organizations with four or more employees, including employment agencies and labor organizations. Your organization must have four or more workers for you to be protected by the City Human Rights Law. The Law also applies to employment agencies and labor organizations.

Recent New York City Employment Law Changes

Most recently in 2008, the New York City Human Rights Law was amended to protect individuals with any lawful sources of income as a new class (for example, those receiving public assistance when looking for housing accommodations).

The Local Civil Rights Restoration Act of 2005 was signed into law by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to ensure that the rights of New York City residents, employees and visitors will have continued protection by the strongest civil rights in the United States, despite changes in Federal and New York State legislation.
